Air Peace slashes air fare for military personnel

Start-up domestic carrier, Air Peace, is offering N10,000 air fare to each retired and serving military personnel on all flights in the country, including business class.
The airlines also believes it is only important to reward the efforts of the military through this gesture.
Chairman of the airline Mr. Allen Onyema disclosed this week at the unveiling of Air Peace at the departure hall of the domestic wing of the Lagos Airport (GAT).

‘We have so much faith in Nigeria’s aviation industry’ – Munetsi

South African Airways(SAA) is one of the leading airlines in Africa. The Regional General Manager, Africa and Middle East, Mr. Aaron Munetsi, in this interview spoke on plans by the airline to employ some unemployed Nigerian pilots, the  challenges the airline is facing, its alliance with Star Alliance, the benefits and other issues. Excerpts:
Some technical personnel in aviation industry are unable to secure employment after graduating from aviation colleges. What is the airline doing to at least give jobs to some of the 500 Nigerian pilots, who are unemployed at the moment?
Mr. Aaron MunetsiThis is a very interesting question, but I want to speak as an African who has been given the African mandate. We cannot sleep peacefully in our house when the next door neigbhour has nothing to eat. We will do everything possible to make sure Nigerian pilots as long as they meet the requirements of recruitment they will be considered for jobs in our establishment.
I just came out of a conference in Johannesburg, South Africa and we were addressed by the Regional Vice President of Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Company and in his address to us, he mentioned that there is an estimated requirement for 1,330 aircraft that are going to be required for Africa countries and by the nature of those aircraft being acquired by African carriers, we are going to need 18,000 pilots and 12,000 technicians.
There is no border to where these pilots and technicians are going to come from. The only requirement is that they must be trained to the standards that are required by the aircraft manufacturers. And remember, this is only from a Boeing point of view. Airbus Aircraft manufacturing company has got its own calculations; very soon, it is going to announce its own understanding of how many aircraft that would be required in the continent. The same thing will happen with Embraer, Bombardier and others aircraft manufacturers.
There is a huge demand for qualified technical skills like pilots, technicians and others. If you think about it, all of us as African airlines have suffered from what we call brain drain, but I was so happy when I heard about this because from the brain drain, we have capped it to a brain gain. Those people that have gone out, have the experience and became expatriates wherever they have been, they are now coming back home. They are coming back with their experiences and expertise. ‘Our goal is to be the world’s best airline’ – Oduntan

Mrs. Wuraola Oduntan, GM Etihad Airways Nigeria
Mrs. Wuraola Oduntan,
Etihad Airways’ newly appointed General Manager for Nigeria, Mrs. Wuraola Oduntan in this interview with FLYNAIJA, speaks on her passion and drive for the aviation industry as well as her roles and expectations with the airline.

Tell us about Etihad Airways and also highlight what makes the airline different from others.
Etihad Airways was launched in 2003 and today employs around 21,000 staff from more than 140 different nationalities. It currently operates a fleet of 102 aircraft to 108 destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. In its ten-year existence it has created a brand and a service offering that is the envy of the industry.  Mandated by its shareholders to be the ‘best in class’, it has worked from the ground up in redefining industry standards in customer service, drawing inspiration from the very best five-star hospitality organisations around the world. This holistic approach to quality and service has led to Etihad Airways being awarded the ‘World’s leading Airline’ at the World Travel Awards for the last five years. The airline has strong management and we are all very clear on the vision to continue to be the best. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than knowing that I am a part of that team, and have a vital role to play in the organisation’s continued progress and success.
What are your duties at Etihad Airways and how do you intend to carry out these roles?
My primary focus will be on ensuring that the presence of Etihad Airways continues to be promoted and enhanced across Nigeria and the West Africa region. This is a very people-orientated business – and I and my team regularly meet with our many corporate clients and travel agents who regularly fly or do business with Etihad Airways, to ensure that they are informed of the latest marketing activities, incentives and product enhancements available to them here and across our network.

4 top travel agencies in Nigeria merge

As part of the strategy to make more sales, provide customers with better service and have good bargain from airlines, four major players in travel agencies business have merged.
The travel agencies that have merged are; Dees Travels, Finchglow Travels, Quantum and Touchdown.
With this merger, the travel agencies in the country are gradually toeing the trend in the development climes, where airlines, and other companies are merging not only to be able to compete, but to also provide customers satisfactory services.

The development is coming just as aviation experts, analysts and stakeholders in the aviation industry have been calling on domestic airlines in the country to consider the option of merging to withstand the competition posed by international airlines and also provide quality air service to their passengers as obtained in other parts of the world where even bigger airlines merge, despite their capacity.
The Vice President, Lagos Zone of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Mr. Yinka Ladipo, confirmed this in an interview in Lagos.

Nigerian passenger causes Ebola scare inflight

Fears that a Nigerian passenger aboard an Air France 1300 flight from Lagos, may have been suffering from the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, on Thursday resulted to isolation of the airline at Madrid’s Barajas International Airport in Spain.
Paris Aena and Air France confirmed that amidst the panic that ensued, when the passenger suddenly began to shake during the flight, the other passengers disembarked from the plane as soon as the flight touched down at the airport before it was towed away to be disinfected.
Spokespersons for Aena, the airport operator and Spain’s ministry of health, also told Reuters that Ebola emergency measures had been activated at the facility. Air France also confirmed that the return flight has been cancelled.

Hangzhou begins 72-hour visa-free stays

East China’s Hangzhou City began to offer 72-hour visa-free entry for international transit passengers on Monday, a move to boost tourism and business.

The policy covers travelers from 51 countries only.  They can enjoy a 72-hour stay in Zhejiang Province after entering the country via Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, providing they have third country visas and onward tickets to leave for a third country or region within 72 hours.
Hangzhou
The move will boost international tourism, commercial and trade cooperation as well as cultural exchanges, said Chen Zongyao, a senior provincial government official on Monday.
Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, is one of the favorite destinations for domestic tourists. But its inbound tourism is weak.
In the first half of this year, Hangzhou received 48 million domestic tourist arrivals and only 1.5 million from overseas, according to the municipal tourism commission.
The same visa-free policy is already in place in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Dalian and Guilin.
The State Council, China’s cabinet, issued a guideline in August to further expand the policy.
Before now,in China, there are only a few cities enjoying the policy, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shenyang etc. In cities which haven’t adopted the policy, international travelers can only stay less than 24 hours in specified areas.

Here are the world’s best & worst airports 2014

birmingham-airportAccording to a recent survey released at the weekend by The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, a travel website that produces an annual survey to identify the world’s worst and best aviation terminals, the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Islamabad, Pakistan tops the list of world worst airports.
Airports were rated based on overall experience as determined by travelers and facilities were judged in four major categories: comfort, conveniences, cleanliness and customer service.

From dirty floors and bathrooms to the regular request for bribes, travelers were unimpressed with the airports that made it onto this year’s Worst Airports in Africa list.

Other complaints revolved around lack of air conditioning, general navigational chaos, limited yet expensive restaurant options and questionably-effective security processes at these airports.

Other complaints revolved around a lack of air conditioning in sweltering climates, general navigational chaos, limited yet expensive restaurant options and questionably-effective security processes.

However, there were no surprises when it came to naming the best airport, with Singapore’s Changi International taking the title it’s held every year since the survey began 18 years ago. Its success is credited to the spa, pool, gym, four-story slide and movie theaters that make the airport a destination in itself.
Offering almost as many cool perks as its Singapore counterpart, South Korean’s Seoul Incheon International was named second best.

Amsterdam Schiphol and Hong Kong International Airport (last year’s third and fourth best airports) dropped out from the top five to ninth and seventh spots, respectively.
Helsinki International Airport, Munich International Airport and Vancouver International Airport wrapped up the top five.

Osun State Land of Virtue

Flag
Flag of Osun
Osun State is an inland state in south-western Nigeria. Its capital is Osogbo. It is bounded in the north by Kwara State, in the east partly by Ekiti State and partly by Ondo State, in the south by Ogun State and in the west by Oyo State. The state's current governor is Rauf Aregbesola, who was declared as the winner of 2007 election by Appeal Court in Ibadan on 26 November 2010.

Ogbeni (Rauf Aregbesola) was also Relected as Osun State Governor on August 9 2014. Osun State is home to several of Nigeria's most famous landmarks, including the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria's pre-eminent institution of higher learning. The university is also located in the ancient town of Ile-Ifẹ, an important early center of political and religious development for Yoruba culture. Other important cities and towns include the ancient kingdom-capitals of Oke-Ila Orangun, Ila Orangun, Ijebu-Jesa, Ede, Iwo, Ejigbo, Modakeke, Ibokun, Ifetedo, Esa-Oke and Ilesa. English was introduced to Osun state - land of the great lamp - in 1998.

Wrongful deportation: Egypt Air accepts responsibility

The management of Egypt Air, which was accused of maltreatment and wrongful deportation of a Nigerian medical student, Joshua Kunle Abdul-Azeez, studying in Ukraine and tearing his Nigerian international passport has admitted making a mistake and offered to compensate the student.
EgyptAir
This followed an intervention by the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora.
Having received a complaint filed against Egypt Air, the committee, led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa Wednesday met with representatives of the Airline on circumstances surrounding the alleged negligence, harassment and deportation of the complainant back to Nigeria aboard EgyptAir.
According to Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (APC, Lagos), “the error of not ascertaining the final destination of the complainant from his ticket was that of Egypt Air.’’

Ebola: Planes from Nigeria to be screened at U.S airports

Despite the acknowledgement of the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta that the Ebola outbreak has been nearly contained in Nigeria, managers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport met ahead of a direct flight from Nigeria that arrived in Houston early Thursday morning, to discuss plans to effectively screen all passengers for the Ebola virus.
Ebola
The decision is a fallout of the Ebola patient and Liberian national, Thomas Eric Duncan, who flew into Dallas from Liberia on September 20 and was later diagnosed to have been infected with the virus in the US.
Thomas Eric Duncan, the patient currently being treated in the Dallas area, boarded a flight from Liberia on Sept. 19 and arrived in Texas on Sept. 20.United Airlines said Wednesday that it was told by the CDC that Duncan had used the airline to travel from Brussels to Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., before flying from Dulles to Dallas-Fort Worth.
Several African nations have restricted or banned air travel from Ebola-stricken countries, and airlines including Kenya Airways, British Airways, Air Cote D’Ivoire and Nigeria’s Arik Air have suspended flights from the countries.

Adorable dog returns lost items for KLM passengers

klm beagle
Dutch
airline, KLM that announced it was employing a trained beagle to return
lost luggage to passengers at the airport says the dog was merely a
mascot for its lost-and-found team.
The
airline issued a press release introducing Sherlock, who purportedly
had been trained to locate the rightful owners of lost items — like
cellphones and stuffed animals — at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, often
before they know they’ve been lost.
In an accompanying video, the beagle — outfitted with a backpack — sniffs out passengers inside the terminal.

“When
you see the reactions of the passengers, [it] really is amazing,” Dirk
van Driel, Sherlock’s trainer, says in the video. The airline said it is
able to return an impressive 80 percent of lost items using all
available information like seat numbers, phone numbers, “public social
media details,” and, as the video strongly suggests, Sherlock.
Not surprisingly, the adorable, two-minute YouTube clip has already racked up nearly 500,000 views.
But a spokesperson for the airline told a Dutch news website that the beagle was merely figurative.
“The
dog is purely used to symbolise the active way in which the team will
search for owners and unite them with their lost possessions,” KLM
spokesperson Joost Ruempol is quoted as saying in an English translation
of the article.
Sherlock, it turns out, was an advertising agency creation.
“To
illustrate that KLM goes above and beyond for their passengers, we
decided to involve a search dog,” DDB & Tribal, the agency behind
the spot, told Mediabistro.com’s AgencySpy.

KLM unveils route planner app at Schiphol airport

Dutch carrier KLM has released a route planner app to help passengers transfer at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. The technology marks the first time an airline has used beacon technology to provide an indoor navigation service for travellers.
KLM-route-planner-app
On arrival at Schiphol, passengers must first connect to the airport’s free wifi service, which launched last month
Then, when passing a navigation beacon, those with the KLM smartphone app will receive a notification asking if they would like assistance finding their gate. The app then displays the route they need to take and the estimated time and distance to walk there.
KLM has been installing beacons at gates, in lounges and along the hallways in Schiphol airport.
The app is currently available to download onto Android smartphones, and will be available for Apple iOS devices by the end of the year.
Martijn van der Zee, Air France-KLM’s senior vice-president of e-commerce, said: “Customer feedback, especially on social media, has told us that passengers, even experienced travellers, often worry about transferring to another flight.
“Sixty-seven per cent of our passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol are transfer passengers, and with this new service, KLM aims to improve customers’ travel experience.”

Couple Fined Over Alleged Oral Sex Acts On flight

A former vintner and a salon technician in the US learned on Wednesday that the cost of allegedly having oral sex in their seats in front of other passengers on a commercial airline flight from Medford to Las Vegas in June is $US250 ($A262).
But to former Troon Winery vintner Christopher Martin, his plea today to a federal misdemeanor in the case that garnered international attention has cost him much more than that.

“I have made many mistakes in my life, none greater than this one,” Martin said in a written statement sent this afternoon to the Mail Tribune. “I have lost my job, my reputation and damaged the legacy I had worked 10 years to nurture and grow. I will learn from this and move on to the next chapter in my life.”
Martin, of Las Vegas, and Medford resident Jessica Stroble each pleaded guilty in absentia today in US District Court in Las Vegas to a federal misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and each was sentenced to a $US250 fine.

National ID may be used as travel document

ID CARD

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said it would push for the adoption of the new National e-ID Card as a valid travel document that could serve as substitute for the International passport for certain categories of travel.

The new National e-ID Card is a Machine Readable Travel Document (MRTD) recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Head, Card Management Services at NIMC, Mr. Tunji Durodola, told journalists in Lagos that “the back of the NIMC e-ID Card contains three lines called Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) Lines just like the Passport and the same as other National Identity Cards that have ICAO support.”

One of the 13 applets imbedded in the card has similar content usually found in Nigeria’s e-passport and it is known as International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Applet, so it could easily be used as a travel document subject to approval of the international community.
He said rigorous testing by global agencies ensured that the contents of the chip met the standards set by the internationally recognised body.
Mr. Durodola also said the first set of the cards have SmartCard chip but future generations will be dual-interface (chip and contactless) for a truly robust solution.
He said for the project to work properly, NIMC, the federal ministries of aviation, foreign affairs and the Nigeria Immigration Service must agree on the process.

Govt ready to privatise airports

Enugu Int'l AirportThe Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprise, Mr Benjamin Dikki, said in Abuja that the privatization of federal airports in the country would commence soon.
Dikki made this known in his presentation on “Reforms and Privatisation Opportunities in Nigeria” at the ongoing 9th Abuja International Trade Fair.
He said that although the Federal Government had made substantial investment in the aviation sector, a lot still remained to be done, adding that it was the reason why the government was considering privatising the airports.
“We are planning to commence the privatisation of airports; the airports will be more efficient if the private sector is running them. Very soon, we will engage the Minister of Aviation and we will start a new process of privatising or concession of airports just like we have done with the seaports. We are likely to grant concession of maybe 15 to 20 years, according to the business model agreed on, so that investors can make a reasonable return on the investment during the concession period,” he said.

Photo - Jonathan Heisler
These days, part time work for students isn't only to fund certain vanities anymore. Working while you’re at university is a great way to pay for your accommodation and other essential stuff.
UK is increasingly becoming more and more expensive to live in. Truth be told, most international students are self funded, so, it is imperative to work. With higher cost of living now in the UK, students now have to work these days to support themselves.

Considering the fact that most international students support themselves, whilst studying, it is imperative to work. With the restrictions on your visa, it is pretty important to be smart when choosing the kind of job to do here in UK.
In my earlier post, I promised to give a list the 10 smart jobs students can do in the UK that will put extra cash into their pockets.

It would only involve a few days in the hospitals where you are well taken care of and you could end up with about £1000.
If you ask me, that's someone's monthly salary.
Some studies may not be that easy, please ask the doctor exactly what the risks are - both short term and long term. Get all the information you need.

Student Job #5 - Product Reviewer

This is another great way to make money as a student. New products are being tested daily by the product manufacturers, before being rolled out. In most cases, such exercises don't last for more than 2hrs and the minimum amount I've seen is £45.

Sometimes, it could go up to £100. All you'll need to sign up with a company that offers product testing. Once you do this the company will send you emails to fill out screeners to see if you'll qualify for their up and coming product testing.

Once you fill out their screener survey, they'll let you know at the end if you qualify or not.
About 90% of the times you get to keep the product you've tested and still get paid.

It's easy to get security jobs, all you need is the Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence and you are good to go.

Student Job #10 - Learn A Craft Before You Get Here

I deliberately made this the last. It is by far the most important of all. With this you can get paid in cash, you choose your hours and the pay is ludicrous. Anything from barbing, hairdressing, plumbing, fashion designing, the list is endless.
To sow a typical Nigerian buba and sokoto goes for a whooping £60 in London now. Basically, sowing traditional cloths is like a jackpot.
To visit the barber now, the minimum is £5. I strongly advise, if you have enough time, please learn something before leaving your home country. You will smile all through your stay in the UK, if you heed
