Cape Town Tourism creates 50 fantastic budget experiences

January is typically a tight month for Capetonians, especially as school holidays stretch on for another week, but Cape Town Tourism has been hard at work creating a list of 50 fantastic budget experiences that cost no more than R50 per person.
Cape Town TourismFrom hippo spotting at Rondevlei (R12 per adult. R5 per child), to visiting the Slangkoppunt Lighthouse (R16 for a guided tour) or picnicking in the Greenpoint Urban Park, there is plenty of low-cost Cape Town to go around.

People-watch for hours at the cost of a cappuccino or even a healthy hot chocolate at Bree Street’s Honest Chocolate, learn something new on a tour (R50 per adult) of South African Breweries’ historic Newlands headquarters or take a short sea trip (R50 per adult/R30 per child) on the Just Nuisance boat in Simonstown harbour. Join a free yoga class every Tuesday at the Cape Quarter or feel the wind in your hair at the Cool Running’s Toboggan Track in Tygervalley (R40 per ride).
Keep it salty and simple with fish and chips on the Kalk Bay harbour – and a spot of seal watching – or take a stroll on the Mouille Point Promenade – with a stop for a round of putt-putt at just R30.

Says Cape Town Tourism Executive Marketing Manager, Velma Corcoran; “Cape Town can easily be enjoyed with very little cash in your pocket. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by abundant nature and lots of beautiful urban gardens where you can relax and enjoy a slice of history or a sense of community.”
Visitors on a budget can also explore the city’s many hidden gems and there are a number of high value budget accommodation outlets to stay in. Last year the Lonely Planet voted Cape Town’s The Backpack as top of their list of the best value hotels in the world.
More recently The Lonely Planet also found Cape Town to be number two on their Best Bargain Holiday Destinations for 2015. “Youth travel to Cape Town is growing fast,” says Corcoran, “as travellers look to immerse themselves in our culture and engaging urban/natural blend. Part of Cape Town’s allure is that we offer everything from six star luxury to top value long-stay and backpack accommodation all through the year.”
The 2014 World Travel Trends Report by WTM and Euromonitor, revealed that ‘poshtels’ were a trend to watch in 2015. This hybrid between a hotel and hostel is highly in demand with penny-watching travellers who also have an appetite for design and innovation. Many backpacks and hostels would do well to upgrade their offering – whilst keeping their prices low – to attract a share of this travel market.
