Hurray!!! The great city of
Lagos@50. Lagos is the most vibrant city in Nigeria, known as the
financial hub of Africa with exciting non-stop nightlife.”Lasgidi” or
“Eko” as it is fondly called is already showing signs of becoming a
24hours city.
Lagos never sleeps is in the same bracket as cities such
as New York, Paris, Las Vegas, Mumbai. The long awaited celebration of
Lagos@50 kicked off on April 8, 2017. According to the Planning
Committee of Lagos@50, the events lined up for the celebration have been
carefully selected to outline the journey of the state from 1967 till
date.
Lagos is currently decorated with billboards of notable
personalities such as Aliko Dangote, Wole Soyinka, Sunny Irabor, Banky
W., Joke Silva and the incumbent governor of Lagos Mr Akinwunmi Ambode
to highlight the contributions of the city of Lagos to their success
story.
The celebration of Lagos@50 started
with the Waaka Musical held at Muson Centre on the 8th of April, 2017.
Following this, there was Fela Concert on the 13th of April and a boat
regatta parade that displayed the culture and tradition of Lagos on the
15th of April.
Here is a list of the other events happening over the next month to celebrate Lagos@50.
April 29, 2017: Jazz Meets Fashion!:
This
event will spotlight Lagos as the fashion central on the continent
while showcasing top notch Jazz performances from different artistes. It
will be happening live at Eko Hotel & Suite on the 29th of April,
featuring Lagos Grammy award winning Jazz artistes such as Dede Mabiaku,
Waje, Heavywind, Yinka Davies, Najee, Joss Stone and the popular
fashion icon Lisa Folawiyo.
May 1, 2017: Special Parade by the Civil Servants
May 1st will be a special worker’s
day event atAgege stadium where a parade will be done by both active and
retired civil servants in the morning. A special dinner in the evening
will be held to commemorate International Workers Day. Dignitaries and
official members of the House of Representative will be in attendance.
May 1- 5, 2017: Art performance and Lagos Contemporary Dance Festival
There will be a series of
performances happening at Freedom Park, Lagos Island and National
Theatre at Iganmu. It is going to be a long week featuring Lagos
contemporary dance festival and art performances. The week will end in
grand style at different divisions of the state – Ikeja, Badagry,
Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe – where five of the best Nollywood films
and Nollywood classics will be screened for the local audience.
May 7, 2017: Lagos Laughs and Ibile Comedy Challenge
To celebrate “World Laughter Day”
Lagos will feature 50 best stand-up comedians. A competition will be
held between upcoming comedians to discover new talents in the country.
May 13, 2017: The Lagos Carnival
The famous Lagos Carnival will be
happening on the Island and Mainland zones of the states. It is an event
that you don’t want to miss. Lagos carnival is always filled with
troops displaying beautiful costumes and various entertainment which
includes music and dancing. The carnival portrays an extensive mixture
of the Nigerian, Brazilian and Cuban heritage of Lagos city.
May 20, 2017: The Eyo Festival
The Eyo festival will make a grand
return at Tafawa Balewa Square after its last performance five years
ago. The Eyo Festival, also known as Adamu Orisa play, is a Lagos
festival that is believed to manifest the impact of Brazil in Nigerian
traditions. The white-clad Eyo masquerades represent the spirits of the
dead and are referred to in Yoruba as “AgogoroEyo”. This festival has
historically attracted over 10,000 tourists from around the world.
May 25, 2017: A Boxing Match Between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Evander Holyfield
It will be happening at Eko Atlantic
as a contribution to the 50th-anniversary celebration of the creation of
Lagos. The event which was formally announced in Atlanta, Georgia on
March 23, 2017, by the Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka will be a
boxing match between the former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu
and Evander Holyfield, the 5 times World Boxing champion. This event is
expected to attract an estimated 5,000 guests.
May 27, 2017: The Grand Finale of Lagos@50
This marks the grand finale of
Lagos@50 which is on the same day as the Children’s Day Celebration. It
will feature a historic gala night with a rich blend of good music, best
of Lagos cuisine, a photo exhibition that captures the beauty and
uniqueness of the city.
