Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 Shot Down Near Donetsk (Ukraine)

BREAKING NEWS LIVE VIDEO - Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency, Interfax, just now reported on Thursday, July 17, 2014.
Coincidentally, exactly 18 years ago from today on July 17, 1996, a similar international aviation safety breach occur with the downing of TransWorld Airlines flight TWA 800, due to an explosion of the Boeing 747-200 center fuel tanks, shortly after takeoff over Long Island Sound, off the coast of New York.
The Boeing 777-200ER, operating as Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, was flying at 33,000 feet (10,000 meters) at the time it was shot down.
Malaysia Airlines earlier tweeted that it had lost contact with Flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace:
Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow.
The airline later confirmed the crash, approximately 25 miles from the Russia-Ukraine border:
Flight MH17 operated on a Boeing 777 departed Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Amsterdam local time) and was estimated to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.10 am (Malaysia local time) the next day. The flight was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew on-board.
The plane crashed near a village called Hrabov in the Donetsk region, an area that has seen clashes between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatist rebels in recent days.

Malaysia Airlines: Ukraine President Calls Airliner Crash an 'Act of Terrorism'
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko calls on Dutch experts to launch an investigation into the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, according to The Telegraph (U.K.).
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday called the downing of a Malaysian Airlines passenger plane in Ukrainian airspace an "act of terrrorism."

Poroshenko said he had spoken with the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and that Ukraine had offered its condolences on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

He also called for an international investigation into the crash.

Both the government in Kiev and the pro-Russia separatists who have been fighting in the Donetsk region denied any responsibility for downing the plane, which was carrying 295 people.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page that the plane was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher.

Successful Day Two at Ticket Summit® in Las Vegas

Ticket Summit® concludes another successful day of networking, panels, and live entertainment discussions at the ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. After breakfast in the Ironwood Ballroom, Thursday’s schedule began with “Ticketing Bundles and Distribution,” featuring industry experts from GrouponLive, LivingSocial, and ScoreBig. Discussing the ways in which daily deals and bundles are changing ticket sales, this presentation was engaging and informative, as was the concurrent panel on the global ticketing market with speakers from Events Travel, Mr.TicketKing.com, and TicketBis. These new channels for brokers are exciting opportunities to expand businesses and increase sales.

At 11:00 AM, TicketNetwork® hosted the Broker Council Update where attendees met and talked with twelve members of TicketNetwork’s Broker Council, including representatives from AC Ticket Guys, Best Time Entertainment, Song Technologies, Ticket Galaxy, and TIX CITY. The Broker Council Update was followed by lunch in the Ironwood Ballroom and then “TicketNetwork® Private Label 101” from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM and “The Evolution of the Secondary Ticketing Market” from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. With professionals from Barry’s Tickets, TicketCity, TicketNetwork, and VIP Tickets, listeners learned first-hand from industry leaders about the growth of the secondary ticket market from its beginnings to today.

The evening wrapped up with two important panels: “Legal Issues and Ticketing Trends” and “Small Business Solutions.” Legal experts spoke about how recent legislative changes are affecting the secondary ticket market while VP’s from American Express Open, MassMutual South Carolina, and Square shared their advice for running a small business.

All in all, the day was a great success, providing attendees with useful tools and information, as well as delicious food and drink. Day 2 at Ticket Summit® comes to a close, but there’s still one more day of the conference to look forward to, including Shark Tank’s Daymond John, “PPC Tips and Tricks,” and the Closing Cocktail Party sponsored by Event Tickets Center.

Thousands of tourists stranded as Russia’s oldest travel agency goes bankrupt

Thousands of tourists were left clueless and stranded as Russia’s one of the oldest travel agencies, the Neva was declared bankrupted on Wednesday. The St. Petersburg-based Neva was responsible for thousands of its clients who are looking to get back to Russia and thousands who are wondering how to get away.
Neva-travel-company
The company’s founder and chairman, Sergei Timraliyev, blamed the closure on a “bad season,” that has been exacerbated by a sharp economic slowdown, and said that tourist agencies had become unprofitable due to increased competition and dumping on the market.

About 6,000 of Neva’s clients were on holiday outside Russia when the company announced its bankruptcy, while between 17,000 and 20,000 people with bookings for future trips will be left ticketless, Irina Tyurina, a spokeswoman for the Russian Tourism Union, told Gazeta.ru.

Neva, which has offices across European Russia, said in an online statement that it would help clients stranded abroad get home in any way possible, and offered them “moral support.”

Neva’s general director, Maxim Pirogov, told Vedomosti that the company, founded at the dawn of Russian capitalism in 1990, is insured by insurer Voskhozhdeniye for 454.2 million rubles ($13.2 million), whereas the value of tours sold was below 400 million rubles ($11.6 million).

However, according to Tyurina, it is impossible to say whether sufficient funds will be found to reimburse all of Neva’s clients in full. According to its website, Voskhozhdeniye had capital of just 167.7 million rubles ($4.8 million) at the end of 2013, almost three times less than Neva is insured for.

This much-loved institution is among the most-visited museums in the UK outside of London. With 22 galleries and more than 8,000 objects, Kelvingrove really is the kind of museum in which you can while away a rainy day. Fine art and armouries aside, one of the most popular exhibits is the beehive, which is designed to allow the bees in and out of the building.

National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

Dinosaur skeleton display at the National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh
There are plenty of exhibits designed especially for children at this museum, a great place to learn about the natural and human world. Some of the most remarkable objects on display include a gigantic skull (from a whale named Moby), and that timeless museum classic: a life-sized cast of a T rex skeleton that's a whopping 12m long

Coventry Transport Museum

Interiors of the Coventry Transport Museum, on Millennium Square, in Coventry, Warwickshire, UK
You don't have to a be a gas-guzzling roadhog with a Top Gear tattoo to get excited about this museum's collection of vehicles. Not least because the museum has one of the best collections of bicycles in the country, featuring classics from the painfully rigid Boneshaker to the chilled-out Chopper. Of course, motorheads will want to take a look at the world's two fastest cars (the Thrust 2 and ThrustSCC), which are on permanent display.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield

Photograph: Alamy A bit like an art gallery you can shout in (though maybe don't do it too much), the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a magnificent open-air gallery surrounded by lush countryside. Founded in 1977, and the first of its kind in the UK, the 500-acre park features artworks by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Eduardo Paolozzi. Check the weather before you go – you might need wellies.

Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford

Pitt Rivers Museum
Pitt Rivers Museum
A cornucopia of curios, the Pitt Rivers museum exhibits one man's (Augustus Pitt Rivers) obsessive acquisitions over a lifetime of exploration and discovery. The sheer quantity of stuff in the building becomes evident once you step inside the main hall, where glass cabinets brimming with exhibits fill the floor. With a collection ranging from Tahitian costumes to African crafts, most visitors end up finding at least one object they wish they could take home with them. If only they needed a clearout …

Montreal is a city of juxtaposition: Skyscrapers rub elbows with the 17th century architecture of Vieux-Montreal, while the familiar sounds of English intermingle with the foreign buzz of French. Boulevard Saint-Laurent is a world-class shopping district by day and a popular party scene by night.

Badagry, Nigeria

Badagry, Nigeria Their History in the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Badagry is one of five divisions created in Lagos State in l968.
A darker historical era saw many people of West Africa leave their shores for plantations in Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean. The infamous slave trade in Nigeria is not known to many people like the slave trade in Ghana, Senegal, Togo and Benin. Nigeria and Ghana were former British colonies. Senegal, Togo and Benin were former French colonies. This ancient town of Badagry was founded around l425 A.D. Before its existence, people lived along the Coast of Gberefu and this area later gave birth to the town of Badagry. It is the second largest commercial town in Lagos State, located an hour from Lagos and half hour from the Republic du Benin. The Town of Badgry is bordered on the south by the Gulf of Guinea and surrounded by creeks, islands and a lake. The ancient town served mainly the Oyo Empire which was comprised of Yoruba and Ogu people. Today, the Aworis and Egun are mainly the people who reside in the town of Badagry as well as in Ogun State in Nigeria and in the neighboring Republic du Benin.
In the early 1500's, slaves were transported from West Africa to America through Badagry. It is reported that Badagry exported no fewer than 550,000 African slaves to America during the period of the American Independence in l787. In addition, slaves were transported to Europe, South America and the Caribbean. The slaves came mainly from West Africa and the neighboring countries of Benin and Togo as well as others parts of Nigeria. The slave trade became the major source of income for the Europeans in Badagry.

The town of Badagry wants to enlighten the world to its historic sites, landscapes, cultural artifacts and relics of human slavery. Badagry wants to share this world heritage site with others. They are preserving buildings, sites and memories of this iniquitous period so those tourists can unearth the dark impact of this era. Places of interest include the Palace of the Akran of Badagry and its mini ethnographic museum, the early missionaries cemetery, the District Officer's Office and Residence, the First Storey Building in Nigeria constructed by the Anglican missionaries, relics of slave chains in the mini museum of slave trade, cannons of war, the Vlekte slave Market, and the Slave Port established for the shipment of slaves before the l6th century.

Quote from a booklet entitled "History of the Mobee Family of Badagry and Their Involvement in the Slave Trade", Olusegun Mobee.

"Slaves were never captured in Badagry...As a matter of fact, then, slavery was recognized institution all over the world. Slaves were employed by Kings, Chiefs, and wealthy people in their houses as domestic servants. A man's economic and social status were assessed by the number of slaves he possessed. This type of slavery was known as domestic slavery. Usually, many of these slaves were captives of war. But many of the slave owners on learning that European slave merchants were besieging Badagry with goods such as iron bars, cotton, wool, linen, whiskey, gin, metal wares, and assorted wines in exchange for slaves, wasted no time to bring their domestic slaves to Badagry with the hope of exchanging them for the listed items. It was confessed that the prospects of Trans Atlantic Slave Trade fueled into tribal wars in Yorubaland as the kings and slaves who had taken part of the European slave merchants' offer, went all out to wage war on the other towns and villages with the sole aim of getting slaves to be exchanged for wine and guns."

Thinking about your next vacation spot?

Consider a trip to Nigeria.

Africa has always been a favorite destination for African-American travelers, for many of whom West Africa is usually a "must see" region during vacations. The region has personal historical significance for the Americans.

But for the average North American, Nigeria, for a number of reasons, is not one of the first places that come to mind as a vacation spot. For one, the West African region is a little further afield than the Caribbean or South America and a round trip there adds a few extra hundred dollars to the price of the air ticket. But this is not the main reason why Nigeria, and West Africa in general, is not as popular as East or North Africa or the Caribbean for tourists. The chief reason is government neglect of the tourist industry.

For many decades the Nigerian tourism industry saw little new investment by the state. The traditional tourist attractions -- Game Reserves, Nature Reserves and Museums -- are maintained, but there is very little investment in the promotion of the industry. As a result not many people are aware of Nigeria's rich variety in tourist attractions

The situation is beginning to change, however. There is a new government emphasis on tourism promotion by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, a subsidiary of the Federal Ministry Culture and Tourism.

Nigerian game and nature reserves may not be as co-extensive or heavily populated with animals as the East African reserves, but there are more of them, each unique in its own way and rich with wild life.
Apart from game reserves, there are museums with offerings of collections of art and cultural artifacts. But the most interesting cultural attractions are the traditional events and festivals that take place at different intervals throughout the year in different towns and communities across the country.

Yankari National Park.
The Yankari Game Reserve is in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, 115km from Bauchi town. It was upgraded to a National Park in 1991. The Park covers an area of 2,250.10 sq km.

Over 50 species of wild animals can be located in the Park, including baboons, elephants, hippos, hartebests and variety of birds and fishes.
There are natural formations such as the Marshall Cave Systems and the Wikki Springs, source of the Wikki River which provides cool and clear natural swimming facilities for visitors. Yankari Park contains several archeological preserves including the Dukkey Well System and the Ampara and Shanshau iron smelting works and furnace shafts dating back many centuries.
Yankari provides a variety of accomodations and facilities for visitors, from hostels for youth and budget travellers to chalets with indoor and outdoor sports facilities and a conference hall.

Cross River National Park.

The Cross River National Park was conceived as a preserve of the last remaining Rain Forest ecosystem in Nigeria. It is located in south-eastern Nigeria. The Park is home to the famed Obudu Cattle Ranch.
It also has the Kanyang Tourist Village designed to accomodate eco-tourists.
Animal attractions in the Park include gorillas and other primates, the gwantibo or golden potto forest elephants and forest leopards.
